Castello Aragonese, Taranto Italy
Castello Aragonese - July 2011 |
During one of our vacations to Italy, actually just this summer, we visited Castello Aragonese which is located in my parents and husbands hometown of Taranto. The Castle was built in the 1400's and was used as a fortress. The structure is so impressive and is occupied by the Italian Navy. The Navy uses parts of the castle as office space and they offer tours at no cost several times a week.
The castle is located at the canal and separates the "Mar Grande" and "Mar Piccolo". The castle was the home port for the Italian Navy during the 1st and 2nd world wars.
We were able to tour most parts of the castle and peeked in a few nooks and crannies. There were a few areas that were off limit because of the ruined state that area was in. The Navy is currently restoring parts of the castle so we are looking forward to visiting it once again!
